2020 Mark Brody Memorial Food Drive (virtual)

The AKPA is so excited to partner with GCI for the 2020 virtual Mark Brody Memorial Food Drive.

GCI is donating a $5,000 match to help reach our goal of $15,000.

With these funds, food pantries will be stocked and food boxes will be put together with Kidney-Friendly foods for Alaska's dialysis patients in the dialysis units across the state. We want to make sure that Alaska's dialysis patients have the renal-specific foods they need to live their best life.

Fundraising will start September 4, 2020 and run through the month of September.

The Mark Brody Memorial - How it Began

After Mark Brody passed, his family approached the AKPA with a small pot of money to create something positive for Alaska's Kidney Patients - they talked about his struggles with his 'kidney friendly' diet that was pretty restrictive and how challenging it was for him to find the money to buy the protein rich foods he needed while on dialysis.  Mark was a pretty typical Alaskan on dialysis. Most live on a limited income and some months they have to choose between medicine or food.  The Mark Brody Memorial Kidney Walk was born that day.

GCI has been a major sponsor of the Kidney Walks. Last year GCI and the AKPA decided to try something new. GCI to had an 'interGCI' food drive. The dialysis units and patients were thrilled with the GCI employees' food contribution. Plans were made for the statewide 2020 Mark Brody Memorial Food Drive except now it will be a virtual event.

The 2020 Mark Brody Memorial Food Drive (virtual) is raising money for much need nutrition and food for dialysis patients in Alaska, but this year there will be no food items collected only monetary donations. The AKPA will be stocking food cupboards at all Alaska dialysis centers.

Help Alaska's dialysis patients have the  kidney-friendly food they need to live their Best Life.
